In College Park, Maryland, Norfolk State showed they could stand up to a formidable opponent as they faced the Maryland Terrapins this weekend. Although ultimately falling 82-69, the Spartans had an impressive start, taking the game to the Terps early on. Norfolk State led at halftime and were within striking distance, trailing by only four points at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Following the match, Norfolk State’s coach, Larry Vickers, emphasized that despite the loss, his team warrants more recognition for their efforts. He pointed out the team’s impressive record, achieving 30 wins this year following 27 and 26 in previous years.
“This team deserves more respect, especially given our track record,” Vickers declared. “Our performance on the court deserves recognition.” He stressed the importance of being acknowledged fairly when competing, wishing for a level playing field in terms of respect from officials.
Vickers was not only vocal about the perceived lack of respect but also highlighted guard Diamond Johnson’s impressive capabilities. Despite having difficult moments during the game, Johnson managed to score 18 points.
Norfolk State experienced a challenging third quarter, allowing Maryland to score 30 points. Additionally, Maryland capitalized on their opportunities at the free-throw line, sinking all 12 attempts.
“I’m not saying officiating lost us the game,” Vickers admitted. “But sending good shooters to the free throw line so often doesn’t help.” With Norfolk State being called for 21 fouls to Maryland’s 12, and Maryland making 23 out of 25 free throws, this undoubtedly took a toll on the game’s outcome.
In discussing Johnson, Vickers expressed confusion over why she hadn’t received more acclaim, asserting her proficiency should place her on several prestigious award lists.
As for his future with Norfolk State, Vickers kept his thoughts to himself, despite his notable success with the team. “We all have dreams and aspirations,” he commented, leaving the door open for what may come next in his coaching career.
The spirited performance delivered by Norfolk State has certainly made a statement, showcasing their talent as they competed fiercely with one of the tournament’s top seeds.
