PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have secured a long-term commitment from their powerful right-handed pitcher, Justin Martinez, who has inked an $18 million, five-year deal. The announcement was made on Saturday, marking a significant development as Martinez actively competes for the team’s closer position.

The newly signed contract replaces the previous one-year agreement dated March 11, which outlined a $772,200 salary in the major leagues and $335,700 for stints in the minors. Key highlights of the contract include a $2 million signing bonus and an escalated salary progression beginning with $1.5 million in 2025. His earnings will increase progressively, reaching $2 million in 2026, $3 million in 2027, $4 million in 2028, and $5.5 million in 2029. Additionally, there are club options set at $7 million for 2030 and $9 million for 2031.

Team manager Torey Lovullo has noted that the decision for the closer role is still pending, with Martinez competing against fellow pitchers, left-hander A.J. Puk, and right-hander Kevin Ginkel. During the 2024 season, Martinez showcased his talent by securing eight saves and attaining a 2.48 ERA, albeit with 36 walks over 72 2/3 innings pitched.
