The Houston Astros made significant roster changes on Saturday by releasing outfielder Ben Gamel and pitcher Jalen Beeks. Gamel’s release comes shortly after he had signed a one-year deal valued at $1.2 million, which included a $200,000 signing bonus with a non-guaranteed $1 million salary. As a result of his release, the Astros are required to pay Gamel 45 days of termination pay, totaling $241,036.

During spring training, 32-year-old Gamel struggled at the plate, managing only a .167 average over 24 at-bats. Last year, he played in 20 games with the Astros, achieving a .259 average and hitting one home run. Meanwhile, 31-year-old Beeks had a relatively unremarkable spring, surrendering one earned run over four innings pitched. Previously, he recorded a 7-4 win-loss record and a 4.50 ERA over the 2024 season while playing for both the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates. During that time, Beeks also achieved 10 saves, nine of which were with the Rockies.

In addition to these moves, the Astros informed both right-handed pitcher Miguel Castro and infielder Luis Guillorme that neither would be making the opening day roster. Despite this news, both players will continue to participate with the team throughout the remainder of spring training.
