STORRS, Conn. — In their NCAA Tournament opener, the UConn Huskies dominated the court in a performance that often resembled a fast-paced track meet more than a basketball game. On this energetic night, Jana El Alfy began her team’s defensive showcase with an impressive blocked shot just 44 seconds into the match, setting the tone for what was to come.

By the conclusion of the first quarter, UConn’s defense had already accumulated seven steals and five blocked shots. Their aggressive play led to 41 points from fast breaks and 34 points capitalized on 20 turnovers by Arkansas State, ultimately securing a 103-34 victory. In this one-sided affair, no player spent more than 22 minutes on the court.

“I haven’t felt that kind of excitement in ages,” expressed UConn senior guard Paige Bueckers. “We were creating chaos, transitioning swiftly into layups. The strategy was to cut off their plays and make life difficult for them. Every player’s energy was contagious, and everyone contributed to the win.”

Freshman Sarah Strong made a notable impact, scoring 20 points, many of which came from outrunning her opponents for fast-break layups. The Huskies dismantled the Sun Belt tournament champions with seamless swiftness. Each starting player for UConn recorded a combination of at least two steals and blocked shots, harking back to the golden era of UConn women’s basketball where defense translated into an offensive advantage.

“It feels like our core identity is being reinforced—leveraging defense to create opportunities for our offense,” stated sophomore guard KK Arnold.

Strong, who impressively matches UConn legend Maya Moore in meeting top 10 freshman criteria for points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots, finished the game with five blocks. The Huskies left Arkansas State, particularly the undersized Red Wolves, overwhelmed and outmatched.

“Being on the court with my team was incredibly fun,” Strong mentioned. “Everything seemed to work in our favor, which made all the difference. I’m thrilled for the next matchup.”
