GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Chicago White Sox are set to begin their season without infielder Brandon Drury, who is sidelined due to a fractured left thumb. The team shared this update on Saturday, confirming that the injury will prevent Drury from starting the season as initially planned.

In a separate development, the White Sox announced that right-handed pitcher Drew Thorpe will undergo Tommy John surgery, a procedure that will end his season prematurely. This surgery will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister, an expert in the field.

Drury, aged 32, is due for a follow-up appointment with Dr. Donald Sheridan on Monday to assess his recovery progress. Known for his versatility on the field, Drury is capable of playing multiple positions including second base, third base, and in the outfield. During spring training, he demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving a .410 batting average with three home runs and 11 RBIs. Drury joined the team under a minor league contract signed on February 7.

Prior to his injury, Drury seemed poised to secure a spot on the White Sox’s opening-day roster. The team is scheduled to host the Los Angeles Angels in their season opener on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Drew Thorpe, a 24-year-old pitcher who made his major league debut last season, is facing a significant setback. Thorpe posted a 3-3 record and a 5.48 ERA over nine starts for the White Sox last year. He initially underwent surgery in September to remove a bone spur from his right elbow.

Thorpe was one of the key players acquired by the White Sox in a trade that sent ace pitcher Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres on March 13, 2024. This latest development with Thorpe marks a considerable challenge for the team as they prepare for the season ahead.
