ARLINGTON, Texas — This week marks the debut of a new museum dedicated to commemorating the tales of those awarded the nation’s most distinguished military accolade, in Arlington, Texas.
The National Medal of Honor Museum is scheduled to open its doors on Tuesday. Located just west of Dallas, the museum will pay tribute to Medal of Honor recipients from conflicts stretching from the Civil War to the war on terror. Over 3,500 individuals have been awarded the Medal of Honor, a prestigious recognition granted by Congress for acts of bravery in combat that go above and beyond.
Jack Jacobs, a retired U.S. Army colonel honored with the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Vietnam War, emphasizes that recipients are not extraordinary heroes but rather ordinary individuals who exemplify essential human values.
“Great feats, whether in combat or everyday scenarios, are achieved by regular people who decide that something must be done and take action,” Jacobs noted.
During an ambush by the Viet Cong on March 9, 1968, Jacobs took command after his leader was severely injured. Even though he was wounded in the head and bleeding heavily, Jacobs took charge. He bravely ventured through hostile fire multiple times to evacuate the wounded, preserving the lives of 13 soldiers and a U.S. adviser.
Now 79, Jacobs reflected on the loss of many comrades during the battle and stated, “You carry the award in honor of those who cannot.”
The museum’s primary aim is to share the life stories of these distinguished individuals, stated Alexandra Rhue, senior VP of engagement at the museum. “Here, you meet the individuals first and then discover their actions,” Rhue mentioned.
The museum’s displays honor recipients across different military branches, varied conflicts, geographic locations, ethnicities, and races.
Chris Cassidy, president and CEO of the museum, expresses his aspiration for the exhibits to elicit motivation.
“Courage is needed by everyone in some way,” he remarked. “Our goal is to embolden people through the narratives of Medal of Honor actions, encouraging a bit of bravery in their own lives.”
Numerous recipients, including Jacobs, feature in videos that respond to visitors’ inquiries through digital exhibits. Currently, over 60 recipients of this commendation are still living.
In celebration of the opening, a special event on Saturday will include musical acts, a drone show, and fireworks. The museum is situated near Globe Life Field, the home ground for the Texas Rangers, and AT&T Stadium, where the Dallas Cowboys play.
