LONDON — The search is on for a new coach for England’s women’s national cricket team following the departure of Jon Lewis. The decision was announced on Friday, prompted by unsatisfactory performances in recent competitions including the T20 World Cup and the Ashes series.

Jon Lewis, who took on the coaching role in 2022, set out to lead the team with high aspirations. Under his guidance, England witnessed a tied Ashes series at home in 2023. However, disappointment followed as the team failed to progress beyond the group stage in last year’s T20 World Cup and subsequently suffered a comprehensive defeat in the multi-format Ashes series against Australia, culminating in a 16-0 loss last month.

Clare Connor, the deputy chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), expressed the need to focus on the potential within the team despite recent setbacks. “While the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and Women’s Ashes in Australia have been disappointing, there is no doubt about the talent we have available and we will look to appoint a successor shortly,” she stated. “We must be ready for an exciting summer of international cricket and to challenge for two World Cups over the next 15 months, including the T20 World Cup in this country next year.”

The ECB has indicated that further updates regarding the appointment of a new coach will be made “in due course,” as they prepare for upcoming challenges and opportunities on the international stage. The focus remains on re-energizing the team and capitalizing on their capabilities as they gear up for future competitions.
