U.S. safety authorities have mandated a recall affecting nearly every Cybertruck currently on the road, marking the eighth such action since these Tesla-made vehicles began reaching consumers just over a year ago.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced this recall, impacting more than 46,000 Cybertrucks. The issue involves a panel running along both sides of the windshield, with a warning that it may detach while driving, posing a significant hazard to other motorists and heightening the risk of an accident.
This component, known as a cant rail assembly, is affixed between the windshield and the roof on either side. According to the NHTSA’s report, it is currently adhered to the truck’s structure with a specific adhesive. However, the solution proposed will utilize a different adhesive not susceptible to “environmental embrittlement,” and will also include additional fortifications.
Tesla has committed to replacing the problematic panel without any cost to vehicle owners. Notification letters are slated to be dispatched by May 19, 2025.
The recall encompasses a total of 46,096 Cybertrucks from the 2024 and 2025 model years, all produced between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025. Tesla reportedly identified the defect earlier this year.
Videos have surfaced on social media recently, showing individuals easily removing these panels from Cybertrucks with their bare hands, resulting in widespread attention.
Since Tesla initiated the delivery of Cybertrucks to customers late in 2023, it has issued eight recalls over a series of safety issues. Previous recalls have addressed concerns ranging from a flaw in an electric inverter that could lead to power loss in the drive wheels, to acceleration pedals that risk getting caught on the interior trim, alongside issues with windshield wipers and display screens.
This recall marks another obstacle for the electric car manufacturer, owned by Elon Musk, which has faced criticism since the political landscape shifted with Donald Trump’s presidency, including Musk’s role in a government efficiency initiative.
Although no injuries have been reported, Tesla locations, including showrooms, vehicle lots, and charging stations, have been the target of various attacks.
Last month, Colorado prosecutors charged a woman following incidents involving vandalism at Tesla dealerships, including the use of Molotov cocktails and spray-painting derogatory terms on a facility. Meanwhile, federal officers in South Carolina detained a man allegedly responsible for setting Tesla charging stations ablaze, with evidence pointing to anti-government sentiments.
Tesla continues to grapple with significant challenges, as competition in the electric vehicle market intensifies, particularly from Chinese manufacturers. Despite being largely unaffected by the recall news itself, Tesla’s stock has suffered a 42% decrease in 2025, reflecting growing concerns over global sales performance.
For those affected by the recall, Cybertruck owners can reach Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752, or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236. Additional information can also be found at the NHTSA website.
