TROY, Mich. — In a surprising turn of events on Thursday, an early morning altercation in a parking garage in suburban Detroit resulted in a hospital employee being shot by a coworker. The incident led to a swift response at a prominent medical facility, Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, as authorities scrambled to secure the area.
The confrontation occurred when one hospital staff member approached another in the parking area and discharged a firearm, firing five rounds around 7 a.m. The victim, a 25-year-old, received a gunshot wound to the arm and was treated for his injuries within the hospital premises, according to Troy’s police chief.
Although the gunman did not enter the hospital itself, the situation was immediately classified as an active shooter incident, prompting thorough lockdown measures and heightened security protocols, not only at the hospital but also across various educational institutions in the region.
“We’re fortunate it wasn’t an actual active shooter inside,” remarked the police chief during a press briefing, assuring the public that it was a targeted attack rather than a broader threat. Though the exact motive remains unclear, the chief mentioned there had been a recent dispute between the individuals involved.
Residents in the area received emergency notifications on their mobile devices, urging them to avoid the vicinity and seek immediate shelter. In response to the emergency call, police units quickly descended on the scene, blocking main roads and creating a visible police presence to ensure public safety. Troy is situated approximately 22 miles north of bustling Detroit.
The assailant was successfully apprehended roughly two and a half hours after the incident, found in a neighboring suburb.
Corewell Health expressed deep gratitude for the prompt and effective actions of their staff and the law enforcement officers involved, recognizing their role in bringing the situation under control.
One cardiac patient, who was present during the ordeal, described the tense atmosphere as he hid in a closet for safety after leaving a treadmill session. “It was a frightening experience,” he shared with a local radio station, praising the hospital staff for their composed and effective response.
