NICOSIA, Cyprus — Efforts are ongoing as a significant rescue mission unfolds off the coast of southern Cyprus following the sinking of a migrant boat in international waters. As of now, there have been no additional survivors or bodies located apart from those initially recovered, as reported by officials.
Authorities announced on Monday that they had retrieved seven bodies and rescued two individuals approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) south of Cyprus. The boat is thought to have been carrying at least 20 Syrian migrants.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Cyprus has confirmed that the operation is still in progress, utilizing military helicopters, rescue vessels, and drones. Support is also being provided by a helicopter from a British base situated on the island.
“As time passes and no other people are found, hope naturally and dramatically diminishes,” expressed Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas during a press briefing on Monday night.
This rescue endeavor takes place amidst a rising number of irregular border crossings in the eastern Mediterranean. This increase is noted by Frontex, the European Union’s border protection agency, despite an overall decrease across the EU.
Cypriot authorities continue to keep a vigilant eye on the escalating maritime movements originating from Lebanon and Syria, prompted by ongoing instability in the region.
Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis recounted that the first survivor was spotted during a routine patrol. He added, “The response was immediate, which is why we managed to save the second person very quickly.”
