AMHERST, N.Y. — The landscape of NCAA men’s college basketball has changed with no undefeated teams remaining this season. Daemen University, a school situated in Amherst, a suburb of Buffalo, New York, experienced a setback in the Division II men’s tournament on Sunday. The Wildcats faced a tough match and ultimately fell to St. Thomas Aquinas in a tightly contested second-round game of the East Regional, with the final score sitting at 79-74.
Daemen concluded their season with a remarkable 28-1 record. Interestingly, they held a perfect 3-0 record against St. Thomas Aquinas this year before encountering the season-ending loss during the tournament.
Before Daemen’s loss, Tennessee was the last Division I men’s team to hold an unbeaten record, achieving a flawless 14-0 start to the season. However, their streak ended with a defeat to Florida on January 7. In Division III, Wesleyan was the final team to maintain an unbeaten status at 26-0, but their perfect run was halted by Trinity in the NESCAC championship on March 2.
While the men’s teams have had their streaks ended, the NCAA women’s teams still have a standout performer. NYU’s women’s basketball team maintains a perfect record of 29-0 and are continuing a 60-game winning streak. They’re set to enter the Division III national semifinals against Wisconsin-Stout on Thursday in Salem, Virginia, with the ambition of securing a second consecutive national championship.
