SURPRISE, Ariz. — In Friday’s spring training match-up between the Texas Rangers and the Colorado Rockies, Rangers’ pitcher Jon Gray sustained a fracture to his right wrist. This unfortunate injury occurred when a ball traveling at 106.4 mph struck Gray in the fourth inning, hit off a line drive launched by Rockies player Michael Toglia.
The news of Gray’s injury was confirmed by Texas Rangers manager, Bruce Bochy, who shared his concerns and disappointment over the situation. “This isn’t the kind of update we wanted,” Bochy remarked. “It’s really unfortunate for Jon, especially so close to the start of the regular season. It puts us in a challenging position as we have to rethink some strategies going forward.”
Previously, Jon Gray faced a series of injuries that marred his 2024 season performance. Last year saw him dealing with a strained groin and an issue with his right foot, which ultimately cut his playing season short. Gray posted a 5-6 record with a 4.47 ERA during that time. Now, as he approaches the final season of his four-year, $56 million contract signed in 2021, this injury casts doubt over his immediate future with the team.
The 33-year-old pitcher has been with the Rangers for three seasons, achieving a record of 21 wins and 21 losses. Before joining the Texas Rangers, Gray played for the Colorado Rockies, assuming his role as a top selection in the 2013 amateur draft as the No. 3 overall pick. This latest injury is an unexpected hurdle as the team prepares for the upcoming season and necessities adjustments in the pitching lineup.
