Chelsea is on track for a highly successful season as they secured their first trophy by defeating Manchester City 2-1 in the Women’s League Cup final on Saturday.
With this victory, Chelsea’s bid for a quadruple in women’s soccer is officially in motion. Remaining undefeated across all competitions, the team is leading the Women’s Super League with an eight-point advantage and only six matches left in their campaign to defend the title. Furthermore, Chelsea is competing in the quarterfinals of the Champions League and has progressed to the FA Cup semifinals.
The winning goal against Manchester City came courtesy of an unfortunate own-goal by Yui Hasegawa in the 77th minute. Chelsea initially took the lead just eight minutes into the match, with Mayra Ramirez opening the scoring. It was Ramirez’s cross from the right wing that eventually led to Hasegawa misdirecting the ball into her own net.
Manchester City’s Aoba Fujino had earlier brought the scores level with a stunning strike from the edge of the penalty area in the 64th minute.
This match was the first of four encounters scheduled between Chelsea and Manchester City over a 12-day period. They are set to face off in the two-legged Champions League quarterfinals and again in a Women’s Super League fixture.
