TOKYO — Mookie Betts, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ star shortstop, will not participate in the team’s exhibition games in Japan due to illness, as confirmed by team manager Dave Roberts on Saturday.
Despite Betts’ current condition, Roberts remains optimistic that the eight-time All-Star will recover in time for the Dodgers’ season opener against the Chicago Cubs, scheduled for Tuesday at the Tokyo Dome. The Dodgers are set to face Japanese teams Yomiuri Giants and Hanshin Tigers in exhibition bouts over the weekend.
Roberts explained that the 32-year-old developed flu-like symptoms just before leaving Arizona but was deemed fit for the extended journey to Japan by team doctors. “Mookie is present today, but he’s notably under the weather,” Roberts remarked.
“He’s lost some weight, so our main focus is rehydration. He’ll engage in light workouts today, but will not take part in the exhibition games tonight or tomorrow.” Roberts added, “We’ll reassess his condition during our scheduled off day and workout session to determine his readiness.”
This season, Betts is transitioning to the shortstop role full-time after previously playing right field and second base. The 2018 American League MVP concluded the past season with a .289 batting average, along with 19 home runs and 75 RBIs, contributing significantly to the Dodgers clinching the World Series title.
