COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — In a thrilling showdown during the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals, Alabama State edged out Grambling with a narrow 64-62 victory on Friday. CJ Hines played a pivotal role for Alabama State, contributing 15 points to secure the win. With under a minute to go, TJ Madlock made two crucial free throws, giving Alabama State a more comfortable 64-58 lead.
Hines was instrumental not only in scoring but also added five assists for the Hornets, who now boast an 18-15 record. Teammate Tyler Mack was unstoppable from outside the arc, making all four of his three-point attempts to add a total of 12 points to the scoreboard.
On the other side, Kintavious Dozier was the standout for Grambling, finishing the game with an impressive 20 points. Supporting Dozier, James Flippin pitched in with 18 points. Mikale Stevenson delivered a well-rounded performance, managing nine points, collecting nine rebounds, dishing out six assists, and securing two steals for the Tigers, who ended their season at 12-22.
Initially, things looked favorable for Grambling as Hines scored 11 points in the first half, yet Alabama State trailed narrowly by 36-33 at halftime. However, a momentum-shifting 13-2 run in the second half propelled Alabama State into the lead with a decisive 64-58. Mack contributed sharply during this critical phase of the game, scoring 12 points in the latter half.
