SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Blake Walston, a left-handed pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, is facing the unfortunate necessity of undergoing Tommy John surgery, which will end his season.
The Diamondbacks’ manager, Torey Lovullo, broke the news to reporters on Friday.
“Heartbreaking news for him and for our team,” Lovullo expressed. “He has put in tremendous effort, continuously working to advance through our system, and now that progress will have to pause for about 14 months, more or less. This kind of setback is, unfortunately, part of the sport. Maybe there’s a bit of solace in finally understanding what’s needed. He’ll take some time off but aims to return with even more strength than before.”
At just 23 years old, Walston played in seven games for Arizona last season, earning a 1-0 record with a 4.42 ERA, which included two starting appearances. In Triple-A Reno, he achieved a 3-2 record with a 4.85 ERA across 13 starts and one relief appearance.
The Diamondbacks chose Walston as their 26th overall pick during the 2019 amateur draft.
