BRUSSELS — In a notable development, Thibaut Courtois has rejoined the Belgian national team under the new leadership of coach Rudi Garcia. Recently appointed, Garcia marks his debut selection as head coach with this decision.
Courtois’ return marks a resolution in a long-standing issue since he left the Belgian squad just before the 2024 European Championship. The reason for his departure was due to a disagreement with the former coach, Domenico Tedesco. In August, Courtois had openly declared his refusal to play for the national team while Tedesco was at the helm.
The coaching shuffle saw Tedesco exit in January, paving the way for Garcia to take charge. Now, Courtois is among four goalkeepers chosen by Garcia for the upcoming Nations League playoff matches against Ukraine.
However, conspicuously missing from Garcia’s list is Koen Casteels. Casteels, who served as Belgium’s main goalkeeper during Euro 2024, has reportedly opted out of participation due to the situation surrounding Courtois’ reentry to the squad.
For Garcia, this role represents his first experience at the international level. His career has previously included managerial positions at several prominent clubs, such as Napoli, Marseille, and Roma, reflecting his extensive career in club football management.
