Jason Sudeikis’ iconic mustache is re-emerging as “Ted Lasso,” the heartfelt comedy about a relentlessly optimistic American football coach in London, gears up for its fourth season, announced by Apple TV+ on Friday. While the streaming service has yet to reveal details on the new season’s release date or production status, Sudeikis, who is both the show’s lead actor and an executive producer, hinted at a season focused on embracing the unpredictable.

“In season four, the squad at AFC Richmond leaps into the unknown, learning that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be,” Sudeikis revealed in a statement. The character of Ted Lasso was first introduced by Sudeikis in 2013 to enhance NBC Sports’ Premier League coverage. Featured as the coach for London’s Tottenham Hotspur Football Club in a short skit, it became evident that Lasso knew almost nothing about soccer.

During a mock press conference, Lasso humorously declared, “They’re gonna play hard for all four quarters,” drawing attention to his confusion about the sport’s structure. “Do we have any goals this season? Absolutely. We’re gonna win a lot of games and make it to the playoffs,” he added, only to be corrected by a reporter stating, “There’s no playoffs.” His charm quickly won over audiences, leading to Sudeikis reprising the character the following year.

The concept of developing a series around Ted Lasso’s character was considered but didn’t become a reality until Bill Lawrence, known for “Scrubs” and “Cougar Town,” came on board to help turn it into a series for Apple TV+. Debuting in August 2020, amid the global pandemic, “Ted Lasso” portrayed a new chapter for the character as he took on the role of head coach for the fictional team AFC Richmond in London. Lasso’s contagious cheerfulness resonated with everyone, from the most skeptical soccer enthusiasts to viewers longing for comfort during quarantine.

“He’s the version of me that I wish I could be,” Sudeikis shared before the show’s premiere. “He experiences highs and lows like everyone but remains perennially optimistic, hopeful, and genuine.”

“Ted Lasso” has garnered significant acclaim, securing seven Primetime Emmy Awards, including the title of outstanding comedy series for its first and second seasons. The show has also propelled its supporting cast members, such as Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, and Juno Temple, into stardom.
