Madrid—With the upcoming Nations League quarterfinals against the Netherlands on the horizon, the Spanish national team is bringing in fresh talent. Real Madrid’s Raúl Asencio has received his first call-up for the national squad. The 22-year-old defender has been impressing with his robust and dynamic performances for Real Madrid this season, stepping up maturely into the team’s defense amidst Éder Militão’s absence due to injury.

Asencio’s full participation in Madrid’s Champions League round-of-16 victory against Atletico Madrid, which the team clinched through a thrilling penalty shootout, has undoubtedly helped cement his spot in the national team selection. The young defender’s reliability and skill have not gone unnoticed by Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente.

Alongside Asencio, veteran Barcelona defender Íñigo Martínez also rejoins the national fold. This call comes on the heels of Martínez’s contract renewal with Barcelona, extending his stay with the La Liga club until 2026. Their experience and fresh zeal will be assets for Spain as they aim to defend their Nations League title.

Spain is set to face off against the Netherlands in Rotterdam on March 20 and will meet again in Valencia just three days later. With a robust roster comprising talented goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards, Spain seems well-equipped to tackle the Dutch side.

The squad features a mix of seasoned players and emerging stars. Key figures include goalkeepers like David Raya from Arsenal and Unai Simón representing Athletic Bilbao. The defensive lineup also hosts players like Marc Cucurella from Chelsea and Pedro Porro from Tottenham, alongside the newly added Asencio and Íñigo Martínez.

In the midfield, notable players include Martín Zubimendi of Real Sociedad and Barcelona’s Pedri González, while the forward lineup promises flair and precision with talents such as Álvaro Morata from Galatasaray and the young prodigy Lamine Yamal of Barcelona.

Spain’s strategic blend of young energy and experienced leadership aims to pave the way for successful outcomes in the Nations League and fortify their standing as title holders.
