ROME — The celebrated Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace has left her position as the creative director at Versace, the luxury brand founded by her late brother Gianni Versace. As announced by Capri Holdings, the American company that owns the fashion house, she will transition to a new role as the chief brand ambassador. The change in leadership will be effective starting April 1, when Dario Vitale, previously the design director at Miu Miu under the Prada Group, steps into her former position.
Donatella Versace, aged 69, expressed her support for Vitale, praising the importance of nurturing the future generation of designers. Vitale, 41, conveyed his gratitude for the trust placed in him.
Assuming the creative director role after her brother’s tragic murder in Miami in 1997, Donatella initially struggled but soon blossomed into a bold and influential figure in the fashion world. Her tenure is marked by iconic moments, including a heartfelt tribute to Gianni on the 20th anniversary of his death and Jennifer Lopez wearing the infamous jungle print dress at the 2000 Grammy Awards. Donatella’s vision solidified the Versace brand as synonymous with empowerment, overcoming initial insecurities and learning from her early missteps.
The leadership transition at Versace fuels speculation of a potential sale to Prada Group, despite no official confirmation from Capri Holdings, which acquired Versace in 2018 for 2 billion euros. Miuccia Prada’s recent comments during Milan Fashion Week suggest interest in acquiring the brand. While Donatella remained silent on the rumors, her choice to wear a vintage Versace creation at the Fashion Week generates further intrigue.
In response to her departure, Versace was met with extensive tributes from the fashion community, with praise coming from notable figures such as Roberto Cavalli’s Fausto Puglisi and designer Pierpaolo Piccoli, along with legions of fans. On social media, Donatella shared nostalgic images of significant Versace milestones and moments with beloved celebrities like Diana, Naomi Campbell, and Madonna.
John D. Idol, CEO of Versace, called the shift part of “a thoughtful succession plan,” voicing confidence in Vitale’s leadership. As chief brand ambassador, Donatella Versace will advocate for the brand’s core values and continued innovation.
Contributing a substantial portion of Capri Holdings’ annual revenue, Versace plans strategic shifts to reclaim its edgy roots, boost accessory sales, and recapture interest from younger consumers. The brand has faced challenges in menswear, attempting to balance its traditional boldness with quieter designs.
Donatella is eager to see her brother’s legacy continue to evolve through Vitale’s fresh perspective, expressing her commitment and passion for Versace. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” she stated, pledging her enduring support for the brand in her new role.
