FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Boston Red Sox are facing a challenging start to the season as three of their starting pitchers, including right-hander Lucas Giolito, will begin on the injured list. Giolito strained his left hamstring during his initial spring training game against Philadelphia, exiting after just one inning due to hamstring tightness. Although Giolito described the strain as minor, Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that he will be placed on the injured list to start the season.
Giolito will be accompanied on the injured list by teammates Brayan Bello, recovering from a shoulder issue, and Kutter Crawford, who is dealing with a knee injury. This trio of pitchers will miss Boston’s opening game on March 27 against the Texas Rangers.
The 30-year-old Giolito joined the Red Sox on a two-year deal worth $38.5 million. Unfortunately, last season he was sidelined entirely after partially tearing his right ulnar collateral ligament. Prior to joining Boston, Giolito recorded an 8-15 win-loss record with a 4.88 ERA across his time with the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Angels, and the Cleveland Guardians in 2023.
