MUNICH — Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich has renewed his commitment to the club by signing a four-year contract extension. The announcement came after extensive negotiations between Kimmich and the club. Since joining Bayern in 2015, the Germany captain has achieved remarkable success, securing eight Bundesliga championships and a memorable Champions League victory in 2020.
According to Bayern Munich’s chief executive, Jan-Christian Dreesen, Kimmich’s dedication and competitive spirit were evident during his performance in the recent Champions League round of 16. Dreesen emphasized that Kimmich’s tenacity and passion embody the core values of FC Bayern. The club views Kimmich as a crucial link between the existing team and future generations.
Previous reports from Germany suggested that negotiations had hit a snag, with Bayern retracting an earlier contract proposal to Kimmich. However, the new deal reflects Kimmich’s confidence in Bayern as the ideal setting to fulfill his sporting ambitions. He expressed his satisfaction, stating, “The environment here supports my goals, and there is more for me to achieve with Bayern.”
Kimmich has been a versatile player for Bayern, often assuming the role of right back when needed. This season, he has made significant contributions with one goal and ten assists across 39 appearances in various competitions. His decision follows the recent contract renewals of teammates, including attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala, wing back Alphonso Davies, and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Bayern Munich still faces key contract decisions, particularly with forwards Leroy Sané and Thomas Müller, whose current deals are set to expire at the end of the season. The club’s management will need to address these situations to maintain their strong squad for future challenges.
