NEW YORK — This spring, model and entrepreneur Ashley Graham is set to make her first appearance on Broadway, as she steps into the spotlight for the musical “Chicago,” a production that takes a tongue-in-cheek look at stardom itself.
From April 15 to May 25, Graham will portray the charismatic Roxie Hart at the Ambassador Theatre. Known for her influential presence, Graham was named one of Time’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2017 and Glamour’s “Woman of the Year” in 2016.
“I’m honored to make my Broadway debut as the iconic Roxie Hart,” Graham expressed in a statement, sharing her gratitude for embracing this new endeavor and her excitement to perform alongside a remarkable cast.
Graham gained widespread fame after gracing the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in 2016. This marked the beginning of her mainstream success, leading to notable appearances on the cover of Vogue and as a judge on “America’s Next Top Model.”
Beyond modeling, Graham penned the memoir, “A New Model: What Confidence, Beauty & Power Really Look Like,” and recently took on hosting roles on Roku’s “Side Hustlers” and HGTV’s “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge.”
Set against the backdrop of the 1920s, “Chicago” delivers a sharp critique of how show business and media sensationalize criminals, featuring choreography inspired by Bob Fosse, daring costumes, and unforgettable songs such as “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango.”
The narrative revolves around Roxie, a dancer and housewife who becomes entangled in a web of notoriety after murdering her lover who threatens to abandon her. She enlists the help of Chicago’s shrewdest criminal lawyer to manipulate the public, media, and her fellow inmate, Velma Kelly, through scandalous publicity stunts.
Since its inception in 1996 the lead role of celebrity-obsessed Roxie has been portrayed by many stars, including Pam Anderson, Melanie Griffith, Christie Brinkley, Marilu Henner, Brooke Shields, Lisa Rinna, Gretchen Mol, Ashlee Simpson, Brandy Norwood, Jennifer Nettles, and Robin Givens.
