PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — In an unexpected twist, Jason Day withdrew from The Players Championship just an hour before his scheduled tee time on Thursday, citing an illness. The specifics of his condition were not disclosed by the PGA Tour.

Currently ranked 33rd in the world, Jason Day had been a strong contender at the Arnold Palmer Invitational the previous week. However, a setback on the 16th hole of the final round, where he scored a double bogey, put an end to his chances of victory.

Day is no stranger to success at The Players Championship, having clinched victory in 2016 when he was the top-ranked golfer globally. In his absence, Danny Walker stepped in, adding to the field of 26 players who are making their debut at the TPC Sawgrass this year.
