WARSAW, Poland — On Thursday, Finland disclosed a new military aid package aimed at assisting Ukraine, valued at approximately 200 million euros (around $217 million). In tandem with this announcement, Finland committed to strengthening defense collaboration with Kyiv.
This support package primarily includes artillery ammunition, which is currently in high demand, as confirmed by Finland’s Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen. The announcement came following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov.
While the Finnish Defense Ministry specified artillery rounds in their disclosure, other components of the package remain undisclosed at this time. Häkkänen emphasized Finland’s steadfast support for Ukraine, highlighting shared concerns regarding the Russian threat, informed by Finland’s historical context.
Enhancements in cooperation will focus on areas such as information exchange, research and innovation, ammunition manufacturing, and joint defense industry initiatives in both Finland and Ukraine, according to the ministry.
Importantly, Häkkänen stressed the mutual benefits of this partnership, noting that it is not a unilateral relationship. He remarked on the resilience and strength Ukraine’s armed forces have demonstrated over the past three years of conflict with Russia. These experiences, he suggested, offer valuable insights that Finland can integrate into its own defense strategies.
Furthermore, these latest measures will elevate the cumulative value of Finland’s material assistance to Ukraine to 3.3 billion euros (nearly $3.6 billion), showcasing an enduring commitment to Ukraine’s defense resilience.
