The much-discussed, albeit unsatisfactory, chapter of Aaron Rodgers with the New York Jets has officially concluded after two years. The franchise has released the 41-year-old quarterback, a four-time MVP, thus allowing him to explore opportunities as a free agent, should he decide to pursue a 21st NFL season for the first time in his career.
Though the Jets did not officially announce the decision, the release was noted in the NFL’s transaction wire on Thursday morning. Subsequently, the Jets will face a considerable $49 million dead money impact by parting ways with Rodgers. However, by classifying him as a post-June 1 cut, the financial burden is mitigated over two years, with $14 million attributed to this year and $35 million to the subsequent year.
The new management team, comprising General Manager Darren Mougey and Coach Aaron Glenn, informed Rodgers on February 13 of their intention to move forward without him. During that period, New York shared an image across its social media channels, depicting Rodgers in the iconic black Jets attire, facing away from the lens, the caption expressing gratitude: “For everything you’ve given us the past two years, thank you 8.”
The preceding Monday saw New York finalizing an agreement with Justin Fields, former quarterback for the Steelers and Bears. Fields is set to sign a two-year $40 million deal, with a guarantee of $30 million, and is anticipated to take over as the team’s starting quarterback.
Rodgers’ release follows the departures of notable players, including wide receiver Davante Adams and linebacker C.J. Mosley, during the offseason. Should Rodgers decide to continue his professional journey on the field, the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and possibly Minnesota Vikings may present viable options.
Aaron Rodgers initially joined the Jets in April 2023 following an 18-year tenure with the Green Bay Packers, aiming to break the franchise’s prolonged Super Bowl drought, which dates back to Joe Namath’s 1968 triumph. However, Rodgers’ time in New York quickly turned sour after suffering a torn Achilles tendon mere snaps into his debut season, rendering him sidelined, and the team ending on a 5-12 record, a step back that also resulted in the dismissal of coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas.
Throughout his brief stint with the Jets, Rodgers managed six victories in 18 starts, including the game during which he was injured. His contributions included 28 touchdown passes and 3,897 passing yards last year, placing him third in franchise single-season history. But injuries hampered his mobility, particularly a hamstring injury, worsening his performance.
Aaron Rodgers’ illustrious career has seen him amass an impressive 503 regular-season touchdown passes, placing him fifth in NFL history alongside quarterback legends like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre. His cumulative 62,952 passing yards rank seventh in the league’s storied history.
