NEW ORLEANS — Zion Williamson, following an impressive second triple-double within two weeks, was asked if he is currently in the best shape of his career, suggesting he might have lost up to 20 pounds from his listed weight of 284. The 6-foot-6 forward humorously responded to the speculation without confirming any details.

Williamson’s recent performances illustrate his capability to dominate games with flair, captivating fans even as the current season lacks postseason prospects. “When he makes his mind up that he’s going to attack, there’s really nothing teams can do. He’s been doing that lately, even in limited minutes,” stated Pelicans coach Willie Green after their 127-120 triumph over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night. When Williamson is in top physical condition, he’s not only difficult to defend but also contributes significantly by rebounding and defending, Green added.

Against the playoff hopeful Clippers, Williamson delivered a 22-point, 12-assist, and 10-rebound masterclass, showcasing his contagious energy. Coach Green praised this with mention of his massive blocks and dominant presence, adding that such energy plays are essential for the team’s momentum.

Despite fans accepting this as a non-playoff season, they were thrilled by Williamson’s end-to-end sprint and dunk just before the end of the third quarter, highlighted by celebratory punches into the basket padding. This moment provided an electrifying setup for Williamson’s decisive fourth quarter, where he chalked up 10 points, five assists, and five rebounds.

“Once I found that rhythm, I just kind of got in that zone,” Williamson remarked, underscoring his determination to win the game. The Pelicans had initially entered the season with hopes pinned on Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and CJ McCollum for a strong campaign, but those ambitions dimmed due to early injuries affecting all three. The 24-year-old, who has been injury-prone during his six NBA seasons, missed 27 games with a hamstring issue. By the trade deadline, Pelicans pivoted strategically by trading Ingram to Toronto, focusing future plans around Williamson.

Embracing this central role, Williamson recently achieved his first career triple-doubles, including 27 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds in a win at Phoenix. “He’s different,” acknowledged veteran Bruce Brown, who just joined the team last month. Brown stated that Williamson is unstoppable when he chooses to be aggressive.

New recruit, Pelicans’ reserve center Mo Bamba, expressed awe at Williamson’s unique abilities, referring to his launch capabilities and underappreciated passing skills. Williamson has consistently scored 20 or more points in 10 of 12 games since the trade deadline, including a standout 40-point performance in Sacramento and a 37-point outing against the Lakers.

Pelicans’ star CJ McCollum emphasized that while Williamson’s physical talents were never in doubt, he has also shown significant mental growth. Williamson feels it’s not his place to judge whether he’s at his peak performance but admits it’s the best he’s felt both offensively and defensively. His enthusiasm and commitment remain steadfast despite this season’s shortcomings, highlighting his intent to foster better habits for the future.
