BUCHAREST, Romania — Romania’s Constitutional Court has made a definitive decision against lifting the ban on Calin Georgescu, a prominent far-right politician, preventing him from participating in the upcoming presidential election rerun. Georgescu had been the frontrunner in the previous year’s initial election round, a race that was later invalidated by the same court.
This unanimous decision was delivered just days after the Central Election Bureau barred Georgescu from competing in May’s election. The immediate reasoning behind the present verdict remains undisclosed.
Georgescu’s supporters gathered in significant numbers outside the court looming with Romanian flags, expressing their dissatisfaction by chanting accusations of corruption, namely “Thieves!”
The Central Election Bureau’s recent disqualification of his candidacy cited the Constitutional Court’s previous decision to nullify the elections amid allegations of electoral malpractice. It was reported that Russia orchestrated an online campaign to back Georgescu’s independent run. The annulment of the election was announced merely two days before the scheduled December 8 runoff.
