The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is set to host a historic cricket event under lights from March 11-15, 2027, marking the 150th anniversary test between Australia and England. This iconic venue, renowned for hosting the inaugural cricket test in 1877 and the centenary test in 1977, will see its first day-night men’s test. With significant history between the two nations, both previous milestones at the MCG ended in a 45-run victory for Australia.
Todd Greenberg, the CEO of Cricket Australia, emphasized the significance of the event, calling it a perfect blend of cricket’s rich heritage and its modern evolution. The use of lights is expected to attract a larger audience, enhancing the accessibility for fans wishing to witness this memorable occasion. Reflecting on past celebrated performances like David Hookes’ legendary boundaries and Derek Randall’s century from the Centenary Test, Greenberg expressed optimism about the potential for creating new unforgettable moments during the 150th anniversary test.
Coinciding with Australia’s upcoming cricket calendar, the nation is preparing to host the Ashes series against England starting in November 2025. Moreover, the Australian men’s team, which recently reached the semifinals of the Champions Trophy, aims to retain its World Test Championship title against South Africa in England during June.
Australia’s record in day-night test matches has been remarkable, winning 12 out of 13 at home since the format’s inception in 2015. These matches use a pink ball and are structured to include sessions in both daylight and nighttime. Most of these fixtures have taken place in Adelaide, with no game commencing post-January 25.
