BOISE, Idaho — Kristian Gonzalez and Jack Payne were pivotal in Idaho’s recent victory, securing an 80-70 win against Portland State in the Big Sky Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Monday night.
Idaho, which entered the tournament as the sixth seed, now advances with a 14-18 record and is set to face second-seeded Montana in a semifinal matchup on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the fifth seed Montana State will go up against the top-seeded Northern Colorado in another semifinal clash.
Gonzalez showcased his shooting skills by hitting 7 of 12 shots, including 3 of 8 from beyond the arc, and also excelled at the free-throw line with 7 out of 8 successful attempts. Payne bolstered the team with his performance, contributing seven rebounds and three steals alongside his 20 points. Julius Mims added to the efforts with 10 points.
On the opposing side, Portland State, ranked third in the conference with a 19-13 record, saw strong performances from Terri Miller Jr. and Qiant Myers. Miller Jr. led the team with 17 points, demonstrated his presence with 13 rebounds, and managed two steals, while Myers contributed 14 points and six assists. Isaiah Johnson also supported the offense with 11 points.
Idaho seized an early advantage, taking control with 17:24 left in the first half and maintaining their lead throughout the game. Gonzalez was particularly effective in the first half, recording 15 points.
