PITTSBURGH — In a strategic move to create more room under the salary cap, the Pittsburgh Steelers have released experienced defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. This change comes as the team prepares for the upcoming free agency period.
Larry Ogunjobi, who was notably the Steelers’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award last season, has been with the team for three seasons. During his time in Pittsburgh, Ogunjobi recorded a personal low of 41 tackles in the 2024 season and achieved just 1.5 sacks, matching his lowest count since his debut season with the Cleveland Browns in 2017.
Ogunjobi, now 30 years old, was still under contract with the Steelers for one more year. He was set to receive a $4.75 million bonus had he remained on the roster by this Friday. Releasing him frees approximately $7 million in salary cap space for the club.
Meanwhile, the Steelers are taking action to secure the future of other key players. They offered a contract tender to running back Jaylen Warren, who was on track to become a restricted free agent. Warren has thrived since joining the Steelers as an undrafted rookie in 2022, amassing 1,674 rushing yards and scoring six touchdowns over three seasons. Additionally, he has contributed 127 receptions for 894 yards. With his dynamic performance, Warren is poised to possibly have a more significant role in the Steelers’ offensive lineup next season, particularly considering Najee Harris’s impending free agency after surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in each of his four seasons with the team.
Moreover, Pittsburgh has opted to retain veteran center Ryan McCollum, securing his services for another year with a new one-year deal.
