MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings have bolstered their secondary by reaching a deal with free-agent cornerback Isaiah Rodgers. Rodgers, who was previously with the Philadelphia Eagles, brings experience and depth to a position that requires reinforcement as the NFL’s negotiation period begins.

Rodgers has signed a two-year contract worth $15 million, with $8 million guaranteed, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. The deal cannot be made official until the signing window begins on Wednesday.

Originally drafted in the sixth round by the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, Rodgers spent three seasons there before facing suspension in 2023 due to a gambling policy violation. Following his release by the Colts, he found an opportunity with the Eagles and was reinstated in time for last season. Rodgers contributed to the Eagles’ strong group of cornerbacks, making 26 tackles and breaking up four passes over 15 games, including three starts.

At 27 years old, Rodgers adds to a position that saw all three primary Vikings cornerbacks from the previous season potentially departing for free agency. With the future of Byron Murphy, who earned his first Pro Bowl nod, still uncertain, the Vikings will focus on retaining him. Meanwhile, seasoned players like Stephon Gilmore and Shaquill Griffin are set to leave, and Mekhi Blackmon, sidelined last year due to injury, is anticipated to return.

The Vikings, under the leadership of general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, have shown adeptness in the free-agent market. Last season, they secured key additions like linebackers Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Blake Cashman, leading to an unexpected and impressive 14-3 season record.

Quarterback Sam Darnold, who stood out unexpectedly last year, has now signed with Seattle. This transition comes after first-round draft choice J.J. McCarthy suffered a knee injury. With Darnold’s departure, Minnesota must now address the quarterback position. Meanwhile, backup Nick Mullens and tight end Johnny Mundt have moved to Jacksonville, necessitating further recruitment at quarterback. Additionally, the Vikings are searching for new talent in offensive guard and defensive tackle positions.

On a positive note, the Vikings have managed to retain running back Aaron Jones under a new agreement following his impactful first season. Punter Ryan Wright has also agreed to new terms to skip restricted free agency.
