BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona is concentrating on their preparations for the return leg of the Champions League against Benfica following the passing of team doctor Carles Miñarro, according to comments made by head coach Hansi Flick on Monday.
Miñarro tragically passed away on Saturday, mere hours before Barcelona’s scheduled Spanish league clash with Osasuna, which had to be postponed. Flick emphasized the significant role Miñarro played in the club’s achievements and acknowledged the team’s state of mourning.
“It’s a significant loss,” Flick stated a day before the decisive last-16 match on home turf against Benfica. “Carles was not only an exceptional doctor but also a wonderful person. This unique combination benefited the club immensely. His presence will be greatly missed. I believe he’ll be supporting us from above, watching over us. We aim to play with him in our hearts. Winning under these circumstances is crucial. Our responsibility is to press on.”
Flick noted that despite the emotional challenge, the squad remains utterly focused on their training regimen. “It’s a challenging situation, but we are determined to do what’s right,” expressed Flick. “The players are concentrating intensely and are overcoming the scenario. The best approach to that is securing a victory.”
Heading into the match with Benfica, Barcelona carries the advantage, having won 1-0 during their previous encounter in Lisbon, a feat achieved despite being reduced to 10 players due to defender Pau Cubarsí receiving a red card.
A moment of silence was observed in remembrance of Miñarro prior to the team’s training session on Sunday, as well as before the press briefing on Monday. Another moment of silence is anticipated to take place before Tuesday’s match in Montjuic.
