On Monday, numerous users were unable to access X, as a significant series of service disruptions impacted the platform. Elon Musk later suggested that the social media site had experienced a “massive cyberattack” during this time.
Musk shared his thoughts in a post, stating, “We endure attacks daily, but this one seemed to involve substantial resources. It’s likely that a coordinated group or perhaps even a nation is behind it.” He added that investigations were underway into tracing the source.
The disruptions were most notable at specific times, peaking at 6 a.m. Eastern and again at 10 a.m., with Downdetector.com recording over 40,000 user reports about access issues. Subsequently, a prolonged outage persisted for at least one hour starting at noon, most severe along the United States coasts.
Downdetector.com identified that 56% of the problems were associated with the X app, whereas the website accounted for 33% of the reported issues.
This incident comes after similar troubles for the platform—when it was known as Twitter—in March 2023. Back then, users experienced issues such as non-functional links, failed login attempts, and images not loading, leading to widespread service concerns that lasted over an hour.
