LONDON — The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced a significant disciplinary action involving Juan Gabriel Castro, a chair umpire at the national level in the Dominican Republic. On Monday, the ITIA declared that Castro would face a six-year suspension and a $6,000 fine due to his involvement in manipulating match scores to benefit someone placing bets.
Castro was implicated in multiple offenses, with the ITIA identifying 12 violations of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program spanning three distinct matches. Despite being notified, Castro chose not to engage with the ITIA’s charge, leading to the accusation that he deliberately manipulated score entries to alter the official scorecard and support corrupt activities.
According to ITIA regulations, failing to respond to an investigation can result in a “deemed sanction,” at which point the individual has up to ten business days to file an appeal. However, Castro did not pursue an appeal following his sanction.
The provisional suspension against Castro has been in effect since November of the previous year. Consequently, his ban is slated to conclude in November 2030.
