LONDON — The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Monday the suspension of Dominican Republic chair umpire, Juan Gabriel Castro, for a period of six years. In addition, he has been fined $6,000 following charges of score manipulation in matches aimed at aiding a bettor.
Castro’s violations stemmed from twelve breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program within three separate matches. Despite being notified of these charges, Castro did not respond to the ITIA’s inquiry. He was specifically accused of tampering with score entries to alter the scorecard, subsequently facilitating corrupt activities.
In instances where individuals fail to engage with the ITIA’s investigative processes, they can face “deemed sanctions” and are granted a 10-business-day window to file an appeal. Castro, however, did not exercise this right to appeal.
Since being provisionally suspended in November of the previous year, Castro’s ban is set to conclude in November 2030, marking the end of his suspension period.
