GUATEMALA CITY — The notorious Volcano of Fire in Guatemala has once again erupted, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures by evacuating approximately 300 families. The ongoing eruption poses a potential threat to an additional 30,000 residents in the surrounding areas.
The latest eruption began overnight with currently no reported casualties. Standing at an impressive height of 12,300 feet (3,763 meters), the Volcano of Fire is among the most active in Central America, with its last major eruption occurring in June 2023.
It is a stark reminder of the volcano’s deadly potential, as a previous eruption in 2018 tragically claimed the lives of 194 people and resulted in 234 missing individuals.
Located just 33 miles (53 km) from Guatemala’s bustling capital, the volcano continues to be a significant point of concern. The nation’s disaster agency indicated on Monday morning that while the current flow of volcanic material ranges from weak to moderate, there is an expectation that its intensity will increase.
