KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have secured a crucial part of their defense by signing linebacker Nick Bolton to a new three-year, $45 million contract, as per an inside source. This agreement ensures that Bolton remains with the team instead of entering free agency.
Bolton, a valuable player for the Chiefs, was originally picked in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. At 24 years old, the Texas-born standout has proven his worth by starting in 53 of the 57 regular-season games he’s played over the last four years. During his tenure with Kansas City, he significantly contributed to the Chiefs’ victories in two Super Bowls and their appearance in the championship game last season.
The year 2022 marked Bolton’s peak performance when he recorded 180 tackles across 17 games and intercepted two passes. His immense efforts were pivotal in leading the team to a Super Bowl triumph over the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite injury setbacks that limited him to eight games two seasons ago, Bolton bounced back to participate in 16 games this past season. He managed 106 tackles, an interception, and a personal-best three sacks.
Bolton’s intelligence and understanding of coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s intricate defensive strategies make him indispensable. As the player tasked with wearing the helmet rigged with a communication device to the coaching staff, Bolton ensures the team’s defensive alignment is spot on.
The Chiefs have been active in roster adjustments as free agency approaches. Last Wednesday, they traded veteran offensive guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2026 draft. This move was primarily motivated by financial strategy, freeing up $16 million in salary cap space. These budgetary adjustments aim to re-sign critical players like Bolton and fulfill other team requirements.
Additionally, the Chiefs have applied the franchise tag to Pro Bowl offensive guard Trey Smith, guaranteeing him $23.4 million next season in the absence of a long-term contract agreement. Some freed-up funds might contribute to extending the 25-year-old Smith’s contract.
In another significant financial move, the Chiefs agreed to an $11 million contract next season with wide receiver Marquise Brown on Saturday. Brown’s hopes for a long-term deal were previously derailed by an injury during the preseason last year. Though he managed only two games, catching nine passes for 91 yards, Brown made an impactful return in the playoffs. This new contract presents him another opportunity to shine alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Looking ahead, the Chiefs face a significant challenge in filling their left tackle position, which remains unsecured. This need will likely be addressed in the upcoming NFL draft. Additionally, the team might explore enhancing their roster at the wide receiver position and along their defensive line as they prepare for the next Super Bowl chase.
