LONDON — England cricketer Harry Brook has once again opted out of his Indian Premier League (IPL) contract with the Delhi Capitals, marking the second consecutive season he has taken this step. This decision could potentially lead to a two-year exclusion from the tournament.

On Sunday, Brook offered a heartfelt apology to the Delhi Capitals and their fans, yet he emphasized that his commitment and focus remain steadfastly with the England cricket team. Brook, who is 26, is considered a strong candidate alongside Ben Stokes, England’s test captain, to succeed Jos Buttler as England’s white-ball captain after their exit in the group stage of the Champions Trophy.

In a statement posted on social media, Brook expressed, “I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL. I apologize unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. It is a really important time for England cricket and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series.”

He further explained the necessity of his decision, stating, “In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period in my career to date. I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right and playing for my country remains my priority and focus.”

England’s cricket schedule includes a home test series against India beginning in June, followed by the highly anticipated Ashes tour against Australia, which runs from November to January.

Brook’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 IPL similarly follows his previous withdrawal after experiencing the loss of his grandmother. Meanwhile, this year’s IPL is set to kick off on March 22, with the Kolkata Knight Riders facing the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens.
