LAKELAND, Fla. — Baltimore Orioles pitcher Grayson Rodriguez is currently facing a setback with his pitching elbow due to inflammation. As a result, he will be taking a break from throwing for approximately 7 to 10 days.
Manager Brandon Hyde addressed the media on Sunday, revealing that Rodriguez has been administered a cortisone injection. The plan for him is to begin a throwing program following this short period of rest. Hyde had already decided earlier this week that Rodriguez would not be part of the season’s opening lineup because of the elbow discomfort he had been experiencing.
“He’s got some discomfort at the back of his elbow, so we’re seeking various opinions,” Hyde explained. “The good news is, it doesn’t involve the ligaments, so that alleviates some of our worries. However, he’ll still miss some time, and we’re still consulting with several experts to determine the best treatment going forward. The exact timeline for his return is still up in the air.”
Rodriguez, who is 25, delivered an impressive performance last season with a 13-4 record, a 3.86 ERA, and 130 strikeouts over 20 appearances with the Orioles.
Baltimore is scheduled to begin their season against the Toronto Blue Jays on March 27.
