NEW YORK — In a thrilling matchup at Yankee Stadium, New York City FC secured a 2-1 win over Orlando City, with key goals coming in the second half from Alonso Martínez and Hannes Wolf.
Neither side was able to break through in the first half, but it was Martínez who opened the scoring for NYCFC in the 59th minute. His unassisted goal marked his second of the season, adding to the impressive tally he recorded as a rookie last year with 16 goals.
Orlando City managed to level the score in the 69th minute thanks to Luis Muriel. Muriel, with a pass from Marco Pašali?, netted his first goal of the season. In his rookie year, Muriel managed five goals and seven assists over 33 matches, while Pašali?, in his debut season, has already contributed one assist along with two goals.
NYCFC quickly responded, regaining their lead just two minutes later. Hannes Wolf seized a chance with an assist from Julián Fernández to score his first goal of the season. Last season, Wolf scored five times and provided eight assists, marking a solid debut season. For Fernández, this assist was his first of the season, adding to his total since joining the club.
In the goalkeeping showdown, NYCFC’s Matt Freese successfully blocked two attempts on target, while Orlando’s Pedro Gallese made an impressive six saves throughout the match. Both goalkeepers had a quiet first half with Freese not facing any shots and Gallese saving two.
Orlando City has started strongly by scoring a club-record five goals across their first three matches this season. Meanwhile, NYCFC celebrated their first win under their new head coach, Pascal Jansen, who replaced Nick Cushing.
