The New York Giants have solidified their quarterback situation by officially re-signing Tommy DeVito to a one-year deal worth $1.03 million. As an exclusive rights free agent, DeVito has been a part of the Giants since he joined the league as an undrafted free agent in 2023 from Illinois. He has taken the field as a starter for the team on eight occasions.

With backups Drew Lock and Tim Boyle set to explore free agency when the NFL’s new league year kicks off next Wednesday, DeVito currently stands as the only quarterback under contract on New York’s roster. However, the Giants are likely to pursue a seasoned veteran quarterback in the upcoming free agency, with names like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson being mentioned as potential candidates.

The Jets recently announced their decision to part ways with the 41-year-old Rodgers, who recorded impressive numbers last season with 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, despite the team’s overall disappointing 5-12 record. As for Wilson, he is also heading into free agency after experiencing a career rejuvenation in Pittsburgh, where he threw 16 touchdown passes over 11 games, aiding the Steelers to a playoff berth.

The Giants hold the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, which provides them with the opportunity to select one of the top quarterback prospects, such as Cam Ward from Miami or Shedeur Sanders from Colorado.

DeVito, at 26 years old and hailing from New Jersey, has quickly become a fan favorite. He is expected to provide valuable depth to the quarterback position, regardless of who ultimately assumes the starting role. During his rookie season, he impressively filled in for the injured Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor, achieving a remarkable feat by becoming the first undrafted free-agent rookie since 1970 to achieve three consecutive games with a passer rating above 100. Although he started two games in the last season, injuries sidelined him as Drew Lock took over for the final outings.

In total, DeVito has tallied eight touchdown passes and three interceptions over his 12 appearances with New York.

Additionally, the Giants announced the re-signing of punter Jamie Gillan and tight end Chris Manhertz, both of whom were approaching unrestricted free agency. Gillan, originating from Scotland and colloquially known as “The Scottish Hammer,” is preparing for his fourth season with the Giants following a three-year tenure with Cleveland. His career net punting average of 41.2 yards is a franchise-best since it became an official statistic.

Manhertz contributed three receptions for 30 yards and a touchdown, also appearing on special teams in his debut year with the Giants. His career prior to New York includes periods with New Orleans, Carolina, Jacksonville, and Denver. Earlier in the week, the Giants also secured new contracts with long snapper Casey Kreiter and linebacker Tomon Fox.
