TAMPA, Fla. — Giancarlo Stanton is scheduled to return to New York for another round of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments aimed at addressing issues with his elbows, as announced by Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Boone conveyed this information during a media session on Friday at the Yankees’ spring training facility, adding that the star player is probably not going to participate in any spring games.
Stanton, who informed reporters on February 17 that he hadn’t taken any swings in three or four weeks due to elbow discomfort, has already undergone two rounds of PRP injections in New York. Despite these treatments, Boone indicated that Stanton’s involvement in upcoming spring games seems unlikely.
Last season, Stanton played 114 games, posting a .233 batting average with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs. His year was interrupted by a left hamstring strain that kept him out from June 22 to July 29. In the postseason, however, Stanton showed his strength by batting .273, with seven home runs and driving in 16 runs.
Stanton signed a monumental 13-year, $325 million contract with the Marlins before the 2015 season, and his outstanding 2017 performance, characterized by 59 home runs and 132 RBIs, earned him the NL MVP title. The Yankees acquired him in December of that year, and he managed to deliver a solid performance in his first season in New York, achieving 38 home runs alongside 100 RBIs.
Despite his success, injuries have marred much of Stanton’s time on the field, causing him to miss a significant number of games over the past few years. Among the injuries he’s faced are strains in the right biceps, right knee, left hamstring (on two separate occasions), left quadriceps, along with right ankle inflammation and left Achilles tendinitis. These challenges have resulted in Stanton being absent for 266 out of 708 games over five seasons.
