South Dakota State triumphs over Omaha 87-67 in League start

    SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Brooklyn Meyer led South Dakota State with 16 points as the team clinched an 87-67 victory against Omaha on Thursday during the Summit League Tournament. This win marks the Jackrabbits’ 57th consecutive triumph over conference opponents.

    Having previously defeated the Mavericks by margins of 38 and 30 points in their regular season meetings, South Dakota State is set to advance to the semifinals scheduled for Saturday. They will face off against the winner of the quarterfinal clash between No. 4 seed St. Thomas and No. 5 North Dakota, slated for Friday.

    For the past three seasons, the Jackrabbits have maintained an unbeaten record in league play, capturing the last two tournament titles in the process. Paige Meyer and bench player Madysen Vlastuin contributed 12 points each for South Dakota State (27-3), which has been the top seed for five consecutive seasons. Madison Mathiowetz and Haleigh Timmer each chipped in with 11 points, aiding in the team’s overall 17-game winning streak. The team’s only defeats this season came against Duke, Georgia Tech, and the current No. 1 Texas.

    Grace Cave was the top performer for the eighth seed Mavericks (14-17) with 20 points, followed by Ja Harvey with 17 points and Aaliyah Moore contributing 12.

    Initially holding a 21-16 lead after the first quarter, the Jackrabbits expanded their advantage with a decisive 10-0 run midway through the second quarter, entering halftime with a 39-24 edge. The lead remained in double figures for the entirety of the game.
