Marketa Vondrousova, who triumphed at Wimbledon in 2023, has decided to take a break from professional tennis in order to concentrate on her recurring left shoulder issues, which were previously operated on. This news was shared by Vondrousova through her social media on Thursday.

In her message to fans, Vondrousova expressed, “Patience and time are my priorities right now, but I believe it will all be worth it. So hopefully back on the court soon.” At 25 years old, the Czech left-handed player has participated in just eight matches in 2025, securing four wins and four losses. Her recent performance includes a second-round defeat to Mirra Andreeva, the eventual champion, at the Dubai tournament last month.

Since exiting in the first round at Wimbledon last July, Vondrousova has refrained from entering any Grand Slam tournaments. She skipped the U.S. Open in September and the Australian Open in January. Additionally, she did not compete in the previous year’s Paris Olympics, opting instead for shoulder surgery in August.

Her first-round loss to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro at the All England Club marked a significant downturn, as she became the first defending women’s champion since 1994 to be ousted in the opening round the following year at Wimbledon. This occurrence is rare, with Steffi Graf being the only other player to face such an outcome since the Open era began in 1968.

Previously, Vondrousova had finished as runner-up at the French Open when she was just a teenager in 2019 and had claimed a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Her victory at Wimbledon in 2023 was a historic moment as she was the first unseeded player to win the women’s singles title at the prestigious grass-court event.

However, Vondrousova’s journey has often been marred by injuries. Her 2022 season was especially challenging, as she missed several months due to two surgeries on her left wrist following a stress fracture that resulted in fragmented bone pieces.

Once occupying the No. 6 spot in the world rankings, Vondrousova currently holds the 45th position. She acknowledged her ongoing battle with injuries, stating, “Stepping out of the court again. I am still struggling with a shoulder injury. Although it’s not easy, I now have a few months of intensive training and rehabilitation to get my arm back together.”
