INDIANAPOLIS — Freshman standout Olivia Olson delivered an impressive performance by scoring 21 points, and fellow newcomer Syla Swords contributed 15 to power Michigan, a No. 5 seed, past No. 12 seed Washington with a 66-58 victory on Thursday. This win, which marks the end of the Huskies’ five-game winning streak, took place in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

The victory propels Michigan (21-9) into a quarterfinal matchup against No. 4 seed and 15th-ranked Maryland on Friday. Previously, on February 17th, Michigan faced the then-No. 21 Terrapins, resulting in an 85-77 defeat. The Wolverines aim to replicate last year’s success when they reached the semifinals, an achievement they last accomplished consecutively in 2019 and 2020.

In a pivotal third quarter, Olson ignited and capped off a 13-0 scoring frenzy, handing Michigan a 49-39 advantage with just over three minutes left in the period. Olson was instrumental during this run, tallying nine points, as Washington faltered, missing nine consecutive shots.

A late 3-pointer from the corner by Elle Ladine brought Washington closer, narrowing the gap to 63-56 with 1:56 remaining. Despite creating defensive pressure that led to turnovers on the subsequent Michigan possessions, the Huskies couldn’t capitalize as Hannah Stines missed a jumper, and Teagan Brown’s 3-point attempt failed to connect as time dwindled.

Jordan Hobbs provided Michigan with additional support, contributing 11 points, pulling down six rebounds, and distributing four assists. Notably, this game marked Olson’s eighth outing of the season with over 20 points.

Washington’s effort was spearheaded by Dalayah Daniels, who impressively notched 22 points and gathered 10 rebounds. Elle Ladine contributed 16 points to the Huskies’ cause, while Sayvia Sellers managed 11 points and an impressive seven assists.

Michigan capitalized on Washington’s errors, scoring 24 points off the Huskies’ 17 turnovers.
