Josh Blackwell, a key player for the Chicago Bears’ special teams and a cornerback, has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the team, as revealed on Thursday.
Throughout his three-year stint with the Bears, Blackwell has managed to secure 22 special teams tackles. Last season, he made headlines by becoming the first Bears player since 2021 to return a punt for a touchdown. This memorable feat took place during the season finale against Green Bay when Blackwell, through a trick play, returned a punt 94 yards.
The play unfolded with DJ Moore pretending to prepare for a catch near the Packers’ sideline in the first quarter. Surprisingly, Blackwell received the punt with his back to the line of scrimmage on the opposite end of the field. Most of the Packers focused on Moore and other Bears, leaving Blackwell a clear path for the touchdown. This strategic play contributed significantly to Chicago’s 24-22 victory against Green Bay, breaking a streak of 10 consecutive losses.
Blackwell’s NFL journey began as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022. Prior to that, he showcased his skills at Duke University, where he played from 2017 to 2021.
