SALT LAKE CITY — On Thursday, the University of Utah announced the appointment of Alex Jensen as its new head men’s basketball coach, a significant move aimed at reinvigorating the program. Jensen steps into the role following the departure of Craig Smith, who was dismissed in late February during his fourth season with the team.
Jensen brings a wealth of experience from his 12 seasons in the NBA, most recently serving as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks. Prior to his time in Dallas, he spent a decade with the Utah Jazz, endearing himself to local fans and building a reputation as a strong coaching presence. His new role at Utah marks his return to leading a team, a role he last held with the Canton Charge in the NBA D-League from 2011 to 2013.
Once a standout player for Utah under the legendary Rick Majerus, Jensen’s college career spanned the 1994-95 season and then from 1997 to 2000 after a two-year stint on a missionary assignment. During his time on the court, he accumulated impressive stats, with 1,279 points and 896 rebounds. His senior year saw him achieve first-team All-MWC honors, supported by averages of 13.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game.
Jensen’s transition to the collegiate coaching scene includes previous experience working as an assistant under Majerus at Saint Louis University from 2007 to 2011. His new role at Utah involves the challenge of restoring the team to prominence within the Big 12 Conference and securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament, a feat the program hasn’t achieved since the 2015-16 season. Under previous leadership, the team made only one NIT tournament appearance, setting a high bar for Jensen’s ambitions.
As Jensen takes the helm, hopes are high for the resurgence of Utah basketball, with the aim of building a competitive team and reigniting the passion of the fanbase. His background both as a player and a coach provides a solid foundation for these aspirations, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter for Utah basketball.
