The Washington Commanders have secured kicker Zane Gonzalez for the upcoming 2025 NFL season, signing him for the minimum league salary of $1.17 million. This comes on the heels of Gonzalez stepping into the spotlight after joining the Commanders mid-season due to a string of injuries and roster adjustments. His performance, particularly during the playoffs, played a pivotal role in helping the team advance to the NFC championship game, drawing attention not only for his skills but also for his openness about living with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

During the playoff stretch, Gonzalez successfully nailed 7 out of 8 field goal tries after an already solid regular-season showing of 5 of 7. His memorable moment came with a game-winning buzz-beater kick against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round, which marked Washington’s first playoff victory in almost 20 years. “The organization is amazing, the coaching staff’s amazing,” Gonzalez shared in January, expressing his gratitude for being part of the team. “Everybody here is truly, truly amazing people. They got something special going, and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

Gonzalez, who will celebrate his 30th birthday in May, joined the Commanders as a replacement for Austin Seibert, who was sidelined with hamstring issues followed by a groin injury. Since joining in November, Gonzalez has completed all but one game for the team, impressively maintaining a perfect streak by converting all 27 extra point attempts. His work ethic and composure have earned high praise from coach Dan Quinn, who regards him as “a true pro.”

Teammate and punter Tress Way noted Gonzalez’s easy-going nature. “He’s about as low maintenance as they come,” Way remarked, appreciating Gonzalez’s cool demeanor under pressure. “It’s fun to play with a guy like that…he just trusts (long snapper Tyler Ott) and I to get everything ready.”

Gonzalez gained viral fame when cameras captured his pre-kick rituals during a crucial game-winning moment. He later explained that these actions were part of managing his OCD, shedding light on his struggles and connecting with others facing similar challenges. “It’s been pretty neat to see the community come together,” he said, grateful for the support.

As the free agency period approaches, Gonzalez stands as the sole kicker listed on Washington’s roster, hinting at potential strategic moves by the team. Recently, the Commanders bolstered their offensive line-up by acquiring wide receiver Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick, a decision aimed at complementing the skills of Offensive Rookie of the Year, quarterback Jayden Daniels.

With general manager Adam Peters navigating over $60 million in salary cap space, questions persist regarding the return of notable free agents like tight end Zach Ertz and the renowned six-time All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner. Washington’s roster remains in flux as they anticipate making key decisions to enhance their chances in the upcoming season.
