MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Tony Schumacher, affectionately known as “The Sarge,” is gearing up for another season in the NHRA. Announced on Wednesday, the legendary driver, with eight Top Fuel championships and 88 race victories, will be racing a partial schedule with Rick Ware Racing (RWR) this season. Schumacher, who holds the record for the most victories in NHRA Top Fuel history, is optimistic about translating this part-time stint into a full-time opportunity by 2026.
The 55-year-old Schumacher is eager to dive into the competition, stating his intention to perform at a “high level immediately” alongside teammate Clay Millican with RWR. Reflecting on the partnership, Schumacher expressed enthusiasm about the team’s dedication, remarking, “The passion and commitment Rick and his group have for racing is incredible, and I can’t wait to get behind the wheel.” Running a limited schedule this year enables the team to build momentum toward the 2026 season, showcasing their potential.
The NHRA Mission Foods Series, embarking on its 74th season, will commence this weekend with the Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida. Nevertheless, Schumacher won’t be partaking in the inaugural event. Details regarding his 2025 schedule are yet to be disclosed.
Last season, Schumacher secured two victories while racing for JCM Racing, finishing eighth in the overall championship standings. However, JCM’s owner, Joe Maynard, has transitioned to an all-female lineup this year, featuring Alexis DeJoria in the Funny Car division, with Ida Zetterström racing part-time in the Top Fuel category.
Schumacher’s legacy is well-rooted; he is the son of NHRA icon Don Schumacher and clinched Top Fuel championships in 1999, 2004-2009, and 2014. Rick Ware, owner of RWR, welcomed Schumacher to the team, highlighting the significant boost Schumacher brings to their organization. “Tony is a huge addition to RWR,” Ware noted. “Bringing a driver of his caliber into our race team strengthens our overall program. We now have two of the best NHRA drivers and sponsor ambassadors in the sport.”
Ware emphasized that the pairing of Schumacher with Millican provides a dynamic opportunity for collaboration. Their joint efforts in sharing feedback and insights can significantly enhance the team’s performance on the track, promising a competitive edge that elevates their entire operation.
